Banter, birdies and being sun safe were all important features of the CARTERS annual charity golf day in Auckland.

Blue skies brought high vibes and high factor sunblock to the fore for this year’s CARTERS charity golf day. In aid of raising funds and awareness for Melanoma New Zealand, 96 players took to Remuera Golf Club’s pristine course on Friday 27 February.

A mix of CARTERS customers and suppliers battled it out for bragging rights in the Ambrose competition, with four-ball groups gunning for glory for a good cause. Along the way, more games and activations gave golfers a chance to win prizes and prestige among their mates, with holes supported by generous sponsors GIB, James Hardie, Yoogo, GJ Gardener Homes, Stellar Recruitment, Altus Window Systems, Bayleys, South Auckland Motors, Cube, Thermakraft/ Kingspan, Brittain Wynyard, Allied Concrete and Flssh.

Charity partner Melanoma New Zealand provided pre-round activity with a put-for-prizes competition involving players taking aim at a raft of items ranging from a Makita drill set to drink bottles. A mobile testing station was also set up to provide skin cancer spot checks for participants ahead of heading out on the course - high protection sunscreen was on hand as an essential requirement for 25-degree-plus day

CARTERS Area Business Development Manager Caroline Druce was part of the organising committee tasked with ensuring the event ran smoothly.

“It was an outstanding day all round. Great to get our customers and suppliers on the Remuera Golf Course where everyone seemed to have such a great time."

“Our partnership with Melanoma New Zealand provides a range of benefits, but none stronger than the prevention of avoidable deaths caused by Melanoma itself Protecting our builders/employees and demonstrating a commitment to community.

The Melanoma New Zealand team on site included registered nurse Gill, who carried out skin spot checks on 49 people at the golf day. Of those, four people were found to have suspicious lesions, including one that was a possible melanoma.

Kate Fullan, Melanoma New Zealand communications manager, said, “With all the tradies working out in the sun, and so many out here today on the course, this is a perfect partnership with CARTERS; helping raise awareness and funds for the prevention and early detection of melanoma among this group of people.

“We’re so glad to be able to be part of days like this, where we can carry out potentially life-saving skin cancer spot checks and we’re really grateful for the support.”

Among those putting their health ahead of their round of golf was Kyle, part of a team representing GJ Gardner Pukekohe. Kyle had a particularly personal prompt to share, seeing the spot check station as a perfect opportunity to get checked himself.

“I think I’ve always been aware of spending a lot of time in the harsh sun and the damage that it can do to your skin, but having this stand here has prompted me to have a check, especially as my mum had melanoma. It’s a real problem here in New Zealand.”

CARTERS and its event supporters and sponsors were pleased to be providing a platform for this important cause. Not only was a record amount of funds raised for a CARTERS golf event, but plenty of fun was had too, with double the number of activations on the course including various games, food, a photobooth and Spin the Wheel all happening between holes.

Congratulations to Bryan, Lochlainn, George and Shane from Capri Group for taking the win on the scorecards submitted on the day. And thanks to all who contributed to the biggest win that was this day and all its outcomes.

A big thanks to our sponsors.
